“Thanks to you, now we have a home, not just a place to stay”

At just 24, *Layla arrived in the UK as a Syrian refugee with her five-month-old baby, hoping for safety and stability. But as a single mother unable to work due to her immigration status, she relied solely on benefits to support them both. On top of this, she was struggling with PTSD and anxiety, receiving therapy to cope with the trauma she had escaped.

When she was placed in unfurnished accommodation, Layla faced a new challenge: an empty, cold space with no furniture; no bed, no sofa, no curtains. She felt overwhelmed and isolated, trying to care for her child in a place that didn’t feel like home.

That’s when we stepped in.

Our team supported Layla to apply for several small grants, which allowed her to buy essential items like a vacuum cleaner, curtains, a sofa, and more. We also helped her access financial support with her council tax and utility bills. These practical steps eased the pressure she was under and gave her room to breathe.

“I can’t describe how it felt to finally sit on a sofa and see my child playing safely on the carpet. It was like my whole body relaxed. For the first time, I felt like we had a real home.”

We also supported Layla with the new eVisa process; a source of stress for many people. When she first reached out, she was having trouble scanning her Biometric Residence Permit on her phone. We talked her through the options, then invited her to our office to complete the process in person. We also helped her apply for her young son’s eVisa at the same time, ensuring the whole family was supported.

“I was really nervous about the eVisa because I didn’t understand what I needed to do. But the team made it simple. They were patient and kind, and I left feeling confident and less alone.”

Layla now has a safe, comfortable space to raise her child. The sense of dignity and control she has regained is a vital step in her recovery and future plans.

“This support changed everything for me. I went from feeling invisible to feeling seen and supported. I still have a long way to go, but now I feel like I can do it.”

This is what holistic support looks like: meeting urgent needs, reducing isolation, and helping people build the foundations for a better future.
