Fix the Five Basics: building a better TA experience in Wandsworth
Temporary accommodation should support people to live with dignity while they wait for a longer-term housing solution. That is why residents, community organisations and Wandsworth Council have been working together through the Wandsworth Temporary Accommodation Forum, shaped by our shared “Fix the Five Basics” framework.
The Five Basics set out simple, practical minimum standards that help families stay safe, connected and able to manage day-to-day life in temporary accommodation:
- To cook
- To connect
- To wash
- To store
- To understand (clear information, rights and support)
In recent weeks, we have taken this work into wider local decision-making. Last month, our Strategic Development manager, Chofian Abobakr, presented at Wandsworth’s Housing Scrutiny Committee, sharing what we are hearing from residents and why clear, consistent basics in TA matter for wellbeing, stability, and children’s outcomes.
We also held our latest TA Forum meeting on 10 Dec 2025, bringing together residents, voluntary and community sector partners, councillors and council housing leads. The discussion was constructive and focused on practical improvements that can strengthen the day-to-day experience of temporary accommodation.
Looking ahead, we will continue working collaboratively with the council and partners to drive progress on three priority areas:
- Resident information and communication
- Digital access and connectivity
- Storage and living conditions
We are grateful to everyone involved, especially residents who continue to share their experiences and ideas. This is community-led work, and we will keep building momentum together.
